So this morning I was listening to NPR, and they did a story about a person who decided, in high school, that most popular music was setting women up in these very false, very consumer-driven roles that she didn't like. She wanted to fight back by singing folk songs in a very plain and authentic way. She tried to learn guitar, but her hands weren't big enough so she went for the ukelele instead. She had one big hit, and now has a dedicated following, but has accepted that she probably will always be a marginal act in the national music scene.
And, struck by the bloody obvious parallels, I thought I should share it with my fellow IG fans. The story can be heard here (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5166363).
